Further poultry processors are actively involved in all areas of the poultry meat industry.
They transform raw meat supplied by Canada’s primary chicken and turkey processors or imported into a variety of fresh, frozen and shelf-stable products for the retail and food service markets. These products range from tried and true poultry-based burgers, sausages and nuggets to innovative, value-added products created to meet the evolving needs of Canadian consumers.
Processed poultry products are propelling growth in Canada’s chicken and turkey sectors. Annual sales of further processed chicken and turkey products are estimated to be more than $1.6 billion.
Canada’s further poultry processors directly employ more than 5,000 Canadians. Further poultry processors have invested over $600 million in their plants and equipment.
Our work on behalf of Canada’s further poultry processors
A sector of CPEP, the Further Poultry Processors Association of Canada (FPPAC) represents the interests of chicken and turkey further processors across the country. Our 18 members’ products account for the majority of the poultry that is further processed by independent further processors in Canada.
We work with members, government and stakeholders to address the technical issues that arise with new product development and promote policies which allow processors to use Canadian chicken and turkey in new and innovative ways.
FPPAC and our members work closely with the primary chicken and turkey processing and farming sectors. We advocate for further processors’ interests in production and import quota allocation policies and discussions. Our goal is to ensure that the chicken and turkey meat supply available to further processors allows the sector to meet Canadian market demands. This work includes:
- Advocating for the interests of Canadian further poultry processors in consultations on government policies, such as Global Affairs Canada’s review of tariff-rate quota allocation and administration
- Providing support to members on technical and regulatory issues such as CFIA inspection, food safety, pathogen control, and meeting regulatory requirements
- Addressing issues of importance to the broader poultry and egg sector, such as labour shortages, animal welfare, and food safety
FPPAC operates as a sector of CPEP.
